Many Perth drivers aren't sure whether they need a logbook service or a general service for their vehicle. The difference matters — particularly if your car is still under the manufacturer's warranty.
What Is a Logbook Service?
A logbook service follows the exact schedule set out in your vehicle's manufacturer service logbook. This includes specific parts, fluids, and inspection points required by the manufacturer at defined intervals (e.g. every 10,000km or 12 months). The mechanic stamps and records the service in the logbook, creating a complete documented history.
Logbook services are essential for:
- Vehicles still under manufacturer warranty
- Vehicles purchased new or near-new
- Maintaining maximum resale value
- Ensuring manufacturer defect coverage is preserved
What Is a General Service?
A general service (or standard service) covers the core maintenance items — typically oil and filter change, fluid checks and top-ups, and a safety inspection — without following a specific manufacturer schedule. It's appropriate for:
- Older vehicles out of the warranty period
- Vehicles where maintaining specific warranty coverage isn't the priority
- Situations where you want a cost-effective maintenance check
Does a Logbook Service Have to Be Done at a Dealership?
No — and this is one of the most common misconceptions among Perth drivers. Under Australian consumer law (Competition and Consumer Act 2010), you can have your logbook service performed by any qualified mechanic. The dealership cannot void your warranty simply because you chose an independent mechanic, as long as the service was performed correctly using appropriate parts and fluids, and the logbook was stamped.
Which One Should You Choose?
If your vehicle is within the warranty period (typically 5–7 years for most brands), a logbook service is always the right choice. Once out of warranty, a general service is perfectly adequate for most vehicles, though a logbook service still adds to resale documentation.
